lathe hammer

How do you get a plate off a lathe?
I just bought an old lathe, and I have to take the plate off, but do not know how. It's been a while since I used a lathe, but I think you have to put a long tube / rod into the hole on the other side of the plate and tap with a hammer until it comes out. Not sure, without But I do not want to break it. Any help?
Jacob, you're right. Apparently, it was not long ago that he forgot. It is a tapered shaft, therefore not have the threads to grab.
