In seeking to do more with what you have, this month ™ € s article explores one method of â € œpiggy-backing € with the sub axis to produce two holes at the same time.
This method uses time and motion of the tower, as the exercises in the main spindle drilled simultaneously with a semi finished part that is already in the secondary axis. This gives two holes drilled in the time it takes to drill a hole. As the drilling usually the longest transaction in a single cycle, any way to reduce or benefit to doing something is a bonus. (More money in your pocket) Those of us who use to work in manual turret lathes know the value of â € œpiggy-backing using € or â € and â € œtreesâ € œnestsâ € to put more of a cutting tool once with some good old ingenuity. The difference here is that we are using the machine and itâ € ™ s programming to be creative rather than a solution manual.
The easiest application or drill two holes at once is where holes are the same size and same length. Leta € ™ s that has a longer portion that has a 4â € € 1Â hole all the way through 1.25 meter with a hole at each end. Instead of drilling 1Â € hole all the way through one side, you can drill halfway with each axis and save time and money by doing so.
When foreign diameter holes to be drilled there are some elements to consider before deciding if this method of work satisfactory.
1.Size of holes
2.Depth of holes
3.Type material
If the diameter of each hole is too far apart others, images of the surface may be too unique for this to work well. For example, if the first hole in the main spindle is 1.000 inches in diameter and the 2nd hole in the side of the sub spindle 125 is the diameter, the difference between the two diameters 875 to create a problem in most of the materials.
Without Even with a big difference in the diameter and surface speed, a situation like this can be solved by using a carbide drill diameter 1,000 in the main spindle and a high speed drill to drill the 125.
An example of this:
A carbide insert diameter of 1.00 stainless steel drill 316 = 400 SFM 003 IPR
Main spindle RPM = 1528
A high speed drill 125 in 316 stainless steel SFM = 50 IPR 002
Sub spindle RPM = 1528
The machine I used for the example article was done in the 735SLY Eurotech, a dual axis, single turret machine.
