How dangerous is it to work with beryllium copper alloy C17200?

I’m a watchmaking student, i want to make my own balance wheels, beryllium copper is known to be one of the best alloys for this purpose, how dangerous would it be to work with it on a lathe? Would i have to wear a dust respirator? What about skin contact? How should it be properly handled?

Thanks for any help.

Toxicity problems with beryllium copper are mainly due to long-term dust exposure. Skin contact is no problem unless you’re allergic. Lathe work should be no problem without protective gear beyond safety glasses. I’d wear a dust mask if I was grinding/sanding on it in any quantity but watchmaking sizes of metal should be no hazard at all. The beryllium in the alloy isn’t soluble, so a cut from it is just a cut.

In Italy there are a lot of companies specializing in precision mechanical engineering, both in manpower and the level of mass production.

Within a precision machine shop you can find a wide range of rolling stock to produce more variable and parts to perform different types treatment, to ensure every customer a product that correspond exactly to their needs, provided high quality and absolutely competitive price.

Companies having to do with the lathe and automatic processing can start only with the design of the object the client needs and finally reach the construction actual practice and specific products. Manufactures precision engineering, precision mechanics workshop machinery, mechanical and manufacturing around spindle lathes are not that different applications – large or small – from a working method. This method allows all machines to make products according to the specific needs of each client, who are working in different fields of application. Therefore lathe and automatic manufacturing Precision Turning and precision mechanical engineering machine shop can always have a large market sector and a wide variety of clients.

As for the fields of application, just think of the food sector, medical sector, power sector, the automotive sector … There is a wide range of applications, is clear that products can be made very small and full of detail.

In this sector is essential for the use of machines to offer more innovative each client the best care of details and the shortest waiting time.

One of the most important events in the sector of mechanics is the mechanics International Fair Specialized (MECSPE), taking place from 19 to March 21, 2009, in Parma Expo. This edition, although in a not very positive economic situation, is expected to be full of content and new technologies for the enterprise sector. Already more than a thousand Italian and foreign companies that have decided to join this event.

A major strength is the presence of many exhibitions dedicated areas, where many companies attending the performance, directly at the fair, of a manufactured product MECSPE transformed into a real house "open".

This is a very important aspect in the engineering industry, which is a world in which innovations achieved through investments in research and often become very strategic for other industrial sectors which called for implementation.

In Compared to last year, the number of these "islands of transformation" has risen sharply, also representing many different fields, such as medical, dental, automotive, aerospace, mechanical precision mechanical engineering, and mold industries.

The ambitious project of these "islands of transformation" has been created from the experience of history demonstration unit "From project to object" born to promote the encounter between design, innovation and technology. In this sector virtuous happen very often, thanks to a strong commitment to technology transfer. This is the case of titanium, a material used mainly in aerospace, which thanks to its characteristics, lightness and resistance to corrosion found many applications in other fields, such as race cars.

In short it is an event not to miss for the most important companies, who want to be at the forefront and always competitive market, especially in an industry where innovation and R & D efforts in the sector are constant.

There is a tool that would be a round thumbnail for woodworking projects?

I create small shadow boxes. I'd like to do things small to go with them. I make bottles and glasses of wood carving.

There is a toy for children who works as a small lathe, but at least one company that has plenty of "real" micro "tools for model makers and illuminators, etc. is what Micromark might want to check your site: http://www.micromark.com similar tools or used to be found on e-bay, etc too. Diane B.
