When trying to order tooling for a lathe, i see the term “lathe swing” a lot. Example: LATHE SWING 17″-48″
What does this mean?
i understood until u said: the head stock usually pivots so that the work will hang off the back of the lathe and not over the bed.
Can u explain to me what that means and what a head stock is?
Lathe swing is the diameter of the wood that can be turned. Ie: a 12″ swing means you can turn a bowl that has a 6″ radius and it will clear the bed of the lathe. When turning bowls or plates that are as large as you indicated, the head stock usually pivots so that the work will hang off the back of the lathe and not over the bed.
maple wood need ASH square inch of 3 x 37, 38 inches long?
making wooden baseball bats (turning in a lathe)
I would find the nearest dealer wood (no lumber yard) and check out the different prices, since it would probably be better off getting 4ft 4×4 4×4 is that they are only 3 and a half inches thick each way. You can still get a better price to buy these lengths of 8 feet and cut you yourself. If have trouble finding a supplier of wood, wood many yards will tell you who is your provider. good luck.
Im looking to make some cash, and turning like a lot of fun. Id probably only make pens and other things. From experience, does anyone know how difficult it is to convert the pen? Also, how expensive are the small wheels?
I've been around for a few years now and love it. However, it takes practice. The hardest part for me to keep my turning tools very strong. And they have to be sharp. Pen and pencils are projects very quickly. And you can make some money on them if you're in the right place Maket. However, as simple as they are, I'd call it-start projects. Wooden The final product is very thin, or any material you choose, some brass tube. Is very easy to ruin a pen or pencil while its goal passes. But one gets the feeling that you'll have a ball. There are plenty of accessories you need for pens and pencils. The list is too long to fit here. Here is a source that I use a lot. I have the http://www.pennstateind.com/ Carba-Tec Lathe. Good luck and have fun
